Continuing Professional Development

CPD:

  • Continuing, because learning never ceases, regardless of age or seniority.
  • Professional, because it is focused on professional competence in a professional role.
  • Development, because its aim is to improve personal performance and enhance career progression.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) will help to make sure that you always have the skills you need to stay competent and to protect your clients, yourself and your practice. Through on-going educational activities you can maintain, develop or increase knowledge, problem-solving skills, technical skills or gain new specialisms and improve professional performance standards which can all help provide a better service.

CPD includes ‘formal’ activities, e.g. courses, conferences and workshops to self-directed learning and you may be able to claim any relevant learning activity, whether structured or self-directed, as CPD within your chosen profession. This could range from weekly reading at one end of the spectrum, to extra qualifications at the other, with an endless variety of learning activities in-between.
